Barry Jones is an experienced teacher, practitioner and researcher in the fields of measurement, sensors, transducers and actuators, instrumentation, metrology, automatic inspection, condition monitoring and preventative maintenance, and nondestructive testing and evaluation. He is author and editor of five books and has published over 280 papers and articles. Since 1986, he has been the Professor of Manufacturing Metrology at Brunel University, West London and Director of the Brunel Centre for Manufacturing Metrology.
He was awarded the DSc from the University of Manchester in 1985, the Dr Honoris Causa from the Technical University of Sofia in 2001, and holds fellowships of five professional bodies. He received a 1995 Metrology for World Class Manufacturing Award.
He is currently Chairman of the new IEE Professional Network for Measurement, Sensors, Instrumentation and NDT (MSI-NDT PN), and Senior Editor for Sensors Series, Institute of Physics Publishing. He is also a member of working Groups of the DTI Measurement Advisory Committee, the EPSRC 2003-2006 Peer Review Panel and the INTErSECT Faraday Sensing Partnership Research Board (managed by Sira Ltd and NPL), Editorial Panel for IEE Engineering Science and Education Journal, Editorial Committee for Journal of Institute of Measurement and Control, and Eurosensors Conferences Steering Group. He was formerly a member of the academic staff at the University of Manchester and then UMIST, Honorary Editor of Journal of Physics E: Scientific Instruments (now Measurement Science and Technology), Chairman of IEE PG S4 (Fundamentals of Measurement) and Vice-Chairman of the IEE Science Education and Technology Division.
