Megha had the unique opportunity to work as the first-ever placement student in Brunel’s Student Living department as part of her Management MSc programme.
Brunel is a prestigious public research university with several departments committed to enhancing student life, and Student Living plays a vital role in ensuring that students feel supported and comfortable in their campus accommodation.
Building community on campus
I started my role as a ResLife Ambassador, acting as the first point of contact for students living on campus, offering support and fostering a sense of community. This involved meeting with students regularly, organising events, and helping with any issues they encountered. After a few months, my managers promoted me to Student Experience ResLife Coordinator, where I led a team of 30 ambassadors, designed student programmes, and organised large-scale events that brought students together and enhanced their campus experience. This role gave me hands-on experience in management, allowing me to bring theoretical concepts to life, from team coordination and event planning to data analysis and digital marketing.
Mentorship and creative freedom
One of the most valuable aspects of this experience was the incredible support I received from senior management. They encouraged me to be creative, gave me the freedom to try new ideas, and were always available to help me tackle challenges. Their mentorship allowed me to develop an understanding of the fundamentals of managing a team, motivating others, and solving problems effectively. Working in such a positive, open environment boosted my confidence, and made me feel comfortable enough to reach out to them with any concerns or ideas.
Preparing me for the next steps in my career
Reflecting on this journey, I’m incredibly grateful for the practical skills I’ve gained, the support I’ve received, and the relationships I’ve built with a team dedicated to enhancing student life. This placement has been transformative, preparing me for the next steps in my management career and leaving me with a deep appreciation for the importance of a supportive workplace culture.
