Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?
I am currently in my final year of LLM studies, which puts me closer to deciding on a career in academia such as PhD or postgraduate study. Besides this, I am actively involved in a variety of groups that specialise in breaking down disablist views through motivational speeches at corporate charity events in collaboration with various charitable groups. Also, I have taken it upon myself to employ a multidisciplinary approach on medical anthropology, inclusive employment etc. when delivering mini-lectures and Q&A sessions within the Brunel community.
What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?
I have chosen to improve by academia to PhD or Postgraduate Research level.
How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?
I was an introvert and extremely reserved person before embarking on my journey with Brunel. My journey could have been characterised by brevity to say the least, but thanks to outstanding academic and other supporting staff who aided me to realise it is better to confront adversity with positivity instead of averting its gaze.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
Brunel’s well-designed complex which has all the facilities in one location is the main attraction for me, especially for a student in a wheelchair whose principal priority is accessibility. I would recommend Brunel to others because they are invested in making students fit for professional life by providing opportunities to augment their professional development arranging regular job updates from professional development centre.
What is your best memory of studying here?
During my graduation ceremony, I was pleasantly surprised by the quick change of events where my name was announced to be recognised as a recipient of the Vice-Chancellor’s award and the Law School award for best contribution to diversity, inclusion, and charitable work. I become deeply overwhelmed with indescribable emotion that was beyond any stretch of my imagination as I was not taken seriously before joining Brunel.
If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?
One piece of advice which I give to other Brunel students is that it is an undeniable fact that there are going to be countless challenging times to dismantle your spirit, but individuals need to learn and move beyond that and remember that the difficult period is not a state of impermanency.
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
When you are continuing with your future endeavours outside of Brunel, it is quite critical that students need to comprehend clearly that knowledge gained from academia cannot be organically applied to other areas of professional settings. This distinction needs to be developed to ensure that it does not interfere with their quality of work. When leaving Brunel to participate in your future endeavours, students need to understand quite clearly that academia has different features to professional life and needs to transfer your knowledge and be adapted accordingly to fit the correct audience.
