Why did you choose to study Environmental Sciences BSc at Brunel?

I choose to study Environmental Sciences, as I am interested in sustainability, and renewable energy. My physics teacher did a course similar to mine and recommended looking for courses that focused on sustainability.

Can you give us a few examples about the hands-on learning experience you’ve gotten on this course?

I have learnt how to use computer programs that I have never used before, like GIS and R. Learning how to use these programs has been helpful in preparing me for second year. Doing mini tasks in class has also helped me to get better at using programs and lab equipment that I used before, just as making lines of best fit in Excel, or using micropipettes.

What is your life at Brunel like outside your subject?

Life at Brunel outside my subject has been extremely fun as I have joined many societies, such as the Athletics and Nigerian Society. I am also on the committee of the Nigerian Society, and this has helped me get to know lots of different people around Brunel. I don’t live on campus, but do not feel as though I am missing out as not all the events are late. I like the people most on campus; they’re friendly, kind and always ready to help.

What kind of employment experience have you had at Brunel?

I am currently a student ambassador, which means that I help out at a range of events, from Open Days to University tours. I have also helped make a video which shows what my course does at the university. I am currently in charge of my course’s social media page, and this has been quite useful in showing me how useful social media can be.

What future career opportunities do you think you gain from the Environmental Sciences BSc?

I think that there are many future career opportunities because of the course that I do. I went to a conference with Shell, and after talking to people who work there, I have seen that there are many roles that I can go for, such as an HSS officer. Even with the skills I have learnt on the course, I could become a GIS programmer or a researcher.

What has the diversity of the staff and students added to the course?

The fact that there are a range of lecturers and students with a range of experiences is quite helpful as I am always learning something new from them. My classmates are always giving creative and innovative ideas when it comes to group work. They have also given me a lot of useful advice concerning placements, module options and the course itself.

Finally, why do you think Environmental Sciences is important to society?

Environmental Sciences is important to society as words like climate change, sustainability and renewables are constantly coming up in the news, and it turns to people like Environmental Scientists to look for solutions to make sure we are being sustainable and after making sure that we’ll be around for years to come.
