Tell us about your career journey since you graduated…
I graduated in 2000 and whilst searching for a job in my field, I started a temporary position with HM Revenue & Customs. Unexpectedly, this turned into a full-time job after securing a position as an Officer of the HMRC! In 2008, I moved to the USA and secured a position in HR with the local government, overseeing 2,500 employees. I was also the Wellness Coordinator for the entire employee population. In 2018, I plunged further into wellness by completing my Yoga Teacher Training and leaving HR. I also work in a pre-school and teach Bollywood Dance.
What does an average day at work involve for you?
Currently, my work day is very varied. At a minimum I am looking after children at a pre-school, or teaching Yoga, teaching private group dance lessons, or at the local YMCA. I am also still studying, mainly on-line, as I look to deepen my understanding of the 8-limbs of Yoga.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and having new experiences. Getting to know myself and the type of work environment in which I can excel. There have been so many highlights in my career, but as of now, being a Yoga teacher is a major highlight. At the end of the day, the most important thing for me is knowing that I have been able to impact another person’s life in a positive way, no matter where I am or what I do.
How would you say Brunel helped you to get where you are today?
To be honest for me, the answer to this question is more personal rather than career orientated. If I hadn’t chosen Brunel, I wouldn’t have had the experiences that I had and met the people that I did. These people and experiences helped me grow spiritually and played a role in forming the person that I have become today. For that I am grateful.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
I chose to study here because of the positive feedback the University received. I have always loved Biology and the course offered here appealed to me, especially because two work placements in the field were also offered. The campus based environment was something that I was also looking for in a University, and close connections to central London was a plus. For all these reason, Brunel may appeal to other potential students.
What is your best memory of studying here?
70’s 80’s night (which used to be called ‘Decades’) at the Students’ Union was always so much fun! I remember the cooked breakfast in the cafeteria being quite deliciously satisfying also. Finding my independence, making new friends and generally, the whole student life experience are all good memories for me, I can’t pick a favourite one!
If you could give one piece of advice to new students, what would that be?
Don’t be too hard on yourself. It will take time to settle into university life, getting to know the campus, making new friends, figuring out meals, making sure you get to class and getting all your coursework done on time - it can be overwhelming. Managing your own time may be a new experience for some. But don’t worry, it will all fall into place - going to University is a great life lesson.
What would be your top tip or advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey?
Some may feel like they have landed their dream job after graduation. For others, finding the right job may be a struggle. We all have to start somewhere on the career path, so be open minded, follow your interests / what you are naturally good at. If you have to take an interim job – it’s ok! Just don’t lose sight of your goals. Experience as much as you can, challenge yourself, be persistent, and keep learning. Expect that some careers are a work in progress and time is needed for it to evolve. Everyone’s journey is unique, don’t compare yourself to others!
