Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?
After graduating from Brunel with an MSc in Digital Design and Branding and later completing my PhD in Design Research, I pursued a career at the intersection of academia and industry. I’ve worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Canada, contributing to human-centred design in healthcare, and as a Lecturer teaching design, UX, and research methods. My journey reflects a blend of interdisciplinary research, teaching, and industry practice, pushing the boundaries of user experience, interface design, and digital storytelling.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
A typical day involves a mix of teaching, research, and collaboration. As a lecturer, I develop and deliver modules on UX/UI, critical thinking, and design research, guiding students through hands-on workshops and projects. As a researcher, I collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders to explore human-centred design methods in complex domains, from healthcare to environmental innovation. My work is dynamic, with a focus on mentoring students, fostering creativity, and bridging academia with real-world impact.
What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?
One major highlight was receiving the Dean's Prize for Innovation and Impact for my PhD at Brunel. This recognition affirmed the value of my interdisciplinary research in project complexity management. Additionally, mentoring graduate students and witnessing their growth during my postdoctoral role has been incredibly rewarding. Seeing the tangible impact of design on addressing societal challenges remains the most fulfilling aspect of my career.
How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?
Brunel’s focus on interdisciplinary research and practice provided me with a strong foundation in design and innovation. The opportunities to work on real-world projects, combined with the guidance of dedicated faculty, shaped my ability to tackle complex challenges creatively. The scholarship and awards I received further motivated me to excel, and the network I built at Brunel continues to inspire and support me in my career.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
Brunel’s emphasis on blending creativity with practical application was a perfect fit for my aspirations. The university’s international outlook, excellent facilities, and access to industry connections stood out. I’d recommend Brunel to others for its supportive community, focus on innovation, and the way it prepares students for both academic and professional success.
What is your best memory of studying here?
My best memory is the collaborative and creative environment during the MSc Digital Design and Branding program. Whether it was late-night brainstorming sessions with peers or presenting our projects to industry professionals, the experience was transformative. Getting to showcase my fully realized design projects at Made in Brunel further reinforced my confidence in my work and created lasting connections.
If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?
Take full advantage of the opportunities Brunel offers - whether it’s participating in research projects, attending workshops, or networking events. Build strong relationships with faculty and peers, as these connections can lead to incredible opportunities later. Most importantly, embrace challenges as chances to grow and refine your skills.
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
Be adaptable and open to interdisciplinary roles; the skills you’ve gained at Brunel are versatile. Build a portfolio that showcases your unique strengths and be proactive in seeking mentorship and collaborations. Lastly, remain curious and committed to learning, as this mindset will help you navigate and succeed in a rapidly evolving professional landscape.
