Tell us about your career journey since you graduated…
Once I graduated I was chosen as one of six Law graduate from 120 applicants for a 6-week graduate scheme at Turner White Solicitors. At the end of the graduate scheme the company offered me a job as a Criminal Paralegal. Now I have my own criminal case files with my own clients.
What does an average day at work involve for you?
I work Monday - Friday and go to University on Wednesdays where I’m studying my Masters in Legal Practice. In regards to my job as a Criminal Paralegal, I prepare cases for trial which includes corresponding with the prosecution and courts, create witness statements, create trial briefs for counsel, correspond with clients and take free legal advice calls.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Winning my first case where the client was facing having his driving licence revoked because of a situation which was not his fault. The client and his family were so appreciative calling me their “guardian angel” and “the terminator” - it made me realise how even though some people may think cases such as speeding or driving with no insurance aren’t as “juicy” as other cases, to that client your work means everything to them as their livelihood is on the line.
How would you say Brunel helped you to get where you are today?
The opportunities and experiences which Brunel had to offer are invaluable. Having the opportunity to volunteer at a family court helping individuals who can’t afford legal representation definitely helped me sell myself as one of the best candidates/graduates to get a role at the Solicitors firm. All the motivation and support from my lecturers got me through my undergraduate degree and made me realise how intelligent I am and if I didn’t have the confidence I do now, I would never have applied for the graduate scheme.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
I chose to study at Brunel because I wanted to live in London but also have that campus lifestyle. I would recommend other people to study at Brunel because it truly becomes a home away from home and it feels like you are part of a community and a family.
What is your best memory of studying here?
One of my best memories at Brunel which I will never forget is the first day I moved into halls and met all my flat mates who I instantly became close with. We all stayed in that night getting to know one another over food and drinking games.
If you could give one piece of advice to new students, what would that be?
No matter how hard things get, never stop believing in yourself because you would never have got to where you are now if you were not good enough. Never pass up on an opportunity, even if you think it might not be worth it - every little piece of experience will help you after university and in your career journey.
What would be your top tip or advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey?
Do not compare yourself to other graduates and what they are doing with their life, everyone moves at different paces and everyone has different experiences. Just go and do you and whatever makes you happy because that is what is most important in life and always stay positive.
