Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?
Since graduating from Brunel, I have been working as an actuary at Hannover Re, a leading reinsurance company, for seven years. My role focuses on risk management, including the maintenance and development of the internal capital model. At the same time, I have been pursuing actuarial certification with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
My daily responsibilities include the development and technical support of the internal capital model, ensuring its accuracy and reliability. I also contribute to the preparation of regulatory reports for the German financial regulator, BaFin. Additionally, I work closely with various teams to improve risk management processes and support business decision-making.
What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?
I would say there isn’t one single highlight in my career so far, as I’m always given exciting and challenging tasks that keep me engaged. What I really appreciate about my work is how dynamic it is. It provides many opportunities for growth and problem-solving, which keeps me motivated. Each new challenge allows me to learn and contribute in meaningful ways, making every day interesting and rewarding.
How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?
My experience at Brunel has played a significant role in shaping my career, providing me with valuable knowledge in stochastic processes, statistics, pricing, and programming skills, which I now apply in my daily work. It was also a great opportunity to learn from outstanding professionals who were always open to sharing their expertise and knowledge. Additionally, Brunel offered numerous extracurricular activities, such as language courses, which were incredibly beneficial. These opportunities allowed me to take my first steps in learning German, a skill that has become essential in my professional journey.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
I chose to study at Brunel because of its strong international presence, which provided a diverse and enriching environment. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and master’s programs, allowing students to gain knowledge in various fields. I would recommend Brunel to others for its global community, excellent academic offerings, and the opportunity to develop both professionally and personally.
What is your best memory of studying here?
My best memory of studying at Brunel was working with a group of talented students from all over the globe on various assignments. I also appreciated the extracurricular activities the university offered, such as trips to different places across the UK. These experiences not only strengthened my connections with my peers but also allowed me to explore new and exciting parts of the country and learn more about its culture.
If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?
My advice to current Brunel students would be to stay focused and set clear goals. Work hard to achieve them, but also take advantage of the opportunity to build lasting friendships that will enrich your life long after your studies. Balancing academics and relationships will help you grow both professionally and personally.
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
Finding your first job that aligns with your interests can be challenging, but don't let that discourage you. It’s important to stay focused and determined throughout the process. Keep refining your skills, networking, and learning from each experience. With persistence and a positive attitude, the right opportunity will come, and it will be worth all the effort you put in.
