Game changer, or dangerous tech? Dr Asress Gikay for Policing Insights

FacialRecognition

Dr Asress Adimi Gikay (Brunel Law School) has been interviewed for one of the most comprehensive reports on the use of facial recognition technology by the police in England and Wales. The report includes diverse views from stakeholders, including academics, policy leaders, government officials and technology providers.

The report, titled Facing the future: The rise of facial recognition in policing - Policing Insight, aims to go behind the headlines and beyond the simplified facial recognition (FR) debate that we see in so much of the media today.

"The thing that stands out most in England and Wales is that the police are 'bold' compared to other countries in trying the tech. Campaign groups and others consider the UK an outlier in the democratic world," claims Dr Gikay. The authors interviewed 34 stakeholders – including policing practitioners, academics, regulators, and suppliers – to share their views and expertise on this complex issue. The analysis includes a foreword from the National Police Chiefs' Council.
