Brunel helps start-up tackle water crisis by redeveloping the second most water demanding product in the home: washing machines.
The need
Product designers and social entrepreneurs Joanna and Paramveer were looking to tackle an aspect of the global water crisis by redeveloping the second most water-demanding product in the home: washing machines. They designed a portable washing machine featuring a removable water tank, which collects used shower water that is then filtered and used in the laundry process.
They have developed their idea in the final year of their studies and reached out to the Brunel Entrepreneur Hub for support and funding to further progress their business.
The solution
Brunel Entrepreneur Hub worked with the start-up to provide one-to-one support and highlight opportunities to take their innovation through accelerator programmes, grants and contests.
The outcome
- Lylo Products won initial funding through competitions including the Brunel Venture Competition (Santander and Alumni fund)
- Lylo Products won the Global Red Bull Basement competition in 2020 followed by the Venture Competition 2021
- They have recently been featured in a TEDx talk where they drew from their experiences as students and start-up founders
Over the last 4 years, the Entrepreneur Hub has been a massive support for Lylo. They offered one on one support throughout my degree and after as a graduate. I didn't think any support was available for developing a product independently rather than for a larger company. Attending the events helped highlight opportunities to take our innovation further through accelerator programmes, grants and contests. Without this early support, it's unlikely I would have known about these opportunities and started Lylo. To this day, much of the advice taught in Entrepreneur Hub sessions is helping our business with critical decision-making.
