The Department of Chemical Engineering within CEDPS recently initiated a series of outreach activities in Thailand and Malaysia. These initiatives aim to promote education and research in the fields of low carbon technologies, contributing to the acceleration of green growth and facilitating the global energy transition towards achieving net-zero targets. Sustainable development has been at the core of the strategic direction within Brunel Chemical Engineering. Notably, the Department is currently planning the launch of a new MSc programme in Advanced Chemical Engineering (Hydrogen and Low Carbon Technologies) scheduled for September 2024.

The team, led by Prof Yinghe He (Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering) and Dr Kok Siew Ng (MSc Programme Lead and Marketing Coordinator), has initiated the first international outreach engagement in Thailand and Malaysia since the department’s establishment in 2018. The team engaged in a series of productive discussions with top-ranked universities, including Chulalongkorn University (Thailand), Taylor’s University and Sunway University (Malaysia), as well as with the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, British Council, and British High Commission. These discussions laid the groundwork for future collaborations in research and education. Throughout the visits, Brunel Chemical Engineering thoroughly presented their courses and research, leaving a lasting impression on their new partners with the high quality of teaching and research. Both the Ministry and universities expressed strong interest in collaborating with Brunel Chemical Engineering in various aspects in the coming years. Significantly, the Ministry has commented that the MSc programme would address the need for future expertise capacity in the transition and adoption of low carbon technologies in Malaysia.

The Chemical Engineering team was joined by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Andrew Jones, Associate Director of the Global Engagement, Kirsty Smith, and Head of Development and Alumni Relations, Andrew Williams, for the meeting with the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, the British Council and the British High Commission. During the meeting with the Ministry, Prof Andrew Jones announced the launch of the Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence Award 2024, offering a £5,000 fee reduction for self-funded international students to embark on their Master’s journey at Brunel. This initiative offers a timely support for the new interdisciplinary MSc programme in Advanced Chemical Engineering (Hydrogen and Low Carbon Technologies) and other postgraduate taught courses at Brunel.

Brunel gratefully acknowledged the Higher Education Association Malaysia (HEYA), led by Mr Tze Howe Ooi (Founder and President), for their dedicated support in facilitating and ensuring the success of these engagement meetings. Brunel and HEYA are eagerly anticipating the realisation of their exciting plans in the near future.
