On the 25th October 2018, Shailesh Vara MP hosted a hugely popular event for Brunel Law School staff, students and alumni. We were welcomed to the House of Commons, where several students had participated in a mentoring scheme. The evening consisted of the Mentoring Launch Event and a networking dinner.
Staff from the Professional Development Centre had worked tirelessly to ensure a seamless evening for everyone involved. The Professional Mentoring Scheme has been going from strength to strength over the last couple of years and has now expanded to include e-mentoring. There were various mentors from a range of firms and chambers who gave myself and other current students advice for our future careers. Students were matched with specific mentors based on their interests and they will work together throughout the year to build rapports and to gain more insight into the legal profession.
Shailesh, as Brunel alumnus, shared his thoughts about his role and the political climate in the UK and Northern Ireland at the moment. This was followed by an exquisite 3 course dinner in an immensely regal setting. During this dinner, we listened to stories from the mentors about their journey from university to a successful career in law, which inspired a lot of our students. It certainly was an exceptional experience and I hope that future law students take part!
