We have a number of events taking place in the Library this week including:

Google Questionnaires - Monday 24 Feburary 2025 

Learn how to create questionnaires using Google Forms.  

You will learn the following in this session:

  • Compose questions using various answering options (multiple choice, drop down, short text, grid etc)
  • Understand how to create sub questions
  • Format the questions
  • Know how to send the questionnaire to participants
  • Understand where the data is collected and how to download it for analysis

 

Introduction to RefWorks - Wednesday 26 February 2025

In this session we will demonstrate how to use RefWorks, bibliographic software that helps you document and manage your references, allowing you to cite while you write.

It will cover:

  • Awareness of bibliographic software and its uses
  • Creating a database of references using various methods of adding bibliographic details
  • Using a database of references to cite in a Word document
  • Using a database of references to create a bibliography/reference list in a Word document

 

  Microsot Excel Part 1: Intro to MS Excel - Wednesday 26 February 2025

In this session you'll learn the fundamentals of MS EXCEL. We'll cover:

 

  • Formatting cells for different data types
  • Using mathematical operators and built-in functions such as SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MAX and more
  • Constructing profit and loss sheets with absolute referencing
  • Sorting, filtering, splitting data and freezing data
  • Manipulating tables, charts and graphs from raw data

  

Developing a search strategy for Systematic Review - Thursday 27 February 2025

 "A systematic review attempts to identify, appraise and synthesize all the empirical evidence that meets pre-specified eligibility criteria to answer a specific research question. Researchers conducting systematic reviews use explicit, systematic methods that are selected with a view aimed at minimizing bias, to produce more reliable findings to inform decision making" (Cochrane Library).

 Find out what goes into creating a rigorous literaure search for systematic review in health and clinical areas. This session will cover:

 

  • Developing your search strategy
  • Choosing where to search
  • Determining robust sets of key terms
  • How to structure your search
  • How to improve the sensitivity and specificity of your search
  • Tips to help you search the databases more effectively.

 

NB. The session will not cover other stages of systematic review including critical appraisal, data extraction and synthesis and writing up the review.

If you're already familiar with Microsoft Excel and would like to progress to an intermediate level, then this session is for you!In this session you'll learn the intermediate features of MS Excel, such as:

  • Understanding Datasets
  • Performing data tidying operations
  • Processing Errors and managing
  • Duplicate values
  • Formatting data for use in other platforms
  • Updating data

 

Microsoft Excel Part 3: Pivot Tables - Friday 28 February 2025

 If you're familiar with Microsoft Excel and you know something about Pivot Tables, then this session is your next step.

 In this session we'll cover: 

  • A basic recap of Pivot Tables
  • Formatting values and Pivot Table styles
  • Sorting and Filtering Data in Pivot Tables
  • Developing Pivot Charts
  • Dynamic Pivot chart Labels
  • Calculated field values
  • Effective use of Slicers
