Introducing Professor Stephen Langdon
A warm welcome to Professor Stephen Langdon, who joined Brunel on 1 October as our new Head of Department for Mathematics.
After studying as an undergraduate at Oxford and as a PhD student in Bath, Stephen took up postdoctoral research positions in Durham, Imperial, Brunel, and at the University of New South Wales. He returned to the UK in 2004 to take up a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at the University of Reading, after which Stephen stayed on as Lecturer, then Associate Professor, and from 2014 until his arrival at Brunel, as Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
Stephen’s research area is numerical analysis, specifically the development, analysis and implementation of efficient and effective methods for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. This work has been funded by EPSRC, NERC, the Leverhulme Trust, the Royal Society, the Met Office and Schlumberger Oilfield UK Plc.
Currently serving on the EPSRC associate peer review college, Stephen is also a member of the awards panel for the QJMAM Fund for Applied Mathematics, and as Vice-Chair of HoDoMs, the representative body for Heads of Departments in the Mathematical Sciences in UK Universities.
