This year’s edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, released this week by Shanghai Ranking, has revealed that Brunel University of London stars in the UK top 10 for two of their subject areas.
For Automation & Control, a discipline exemplified by the research led by Prof Zidong Wang, Brunel ranks 3rd in the country, and for Computer Science & Engineering it ranks 9th.
The research-focused rankings also show how Brunel performs in each subject area among more than 1,900 universities worldwide, including being:
- 42nd in the world for Automation & Control
- in the 101–150 bracket for Computer Science & Engineering and for Business Administration
- in the 151–200 bracket for Electrical & Electronic Engineering, for Metallurgical Engineering and for Hospitality & Tourism Management.
Shanghai Ranking first published its subject-level league tables in 2017. They now cover 55 subject areas, for which Shanghai Ranking uses a tailored range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to compare each of the universities that meet the rankings’ inclusion threshold. The indicators encompass, for each subject area and for each university:
- research output – measured by the number of influential journal publications
- research influence – how well cited the journal articles are, meaning how much the findings have been used as a source by other researchers
- international collaboration – between the university and others worldwide
- research quality – measured by the number of papers published in top journals or top conferences
- international academic awards.
The subject-level rankings complement the annual Academic Ranking of World Universities that has, since 2009, been run by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, a fully independent organisation dedicated to research on higher education intelligence and consultation.
Prof Hua Zhao, Brunel’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research, welcomed the news. “At Brunel, we’re already proud of how highly we rank among universities in the UK and worldwide for many measures of research,” he said. “Our research is truly international, with demonstrable global impact.
“The subject-level Shanghai Rankings provide further independent confirmation of this, and I am particularly impressed with our performance in engineering and computer science disciplines.”
