Boris Johnson hailed a cautious victory at Brunel where national media gathered all night to see how Hillingdon voted in yesterday’s General Election.
The contemplative-looking Foreign Secretary told journalists, candidates and party faithful at Brunel’s Indoor Athletics Centre (IAC) “I want to pay a particular tribute to everybody in this city, the citizens of London, who refuse to be bowed by repeated terrorist attacks and have got on with the democratic process.”
He held his Conservative party seat in Uxbridge & South Ruislip, with 23,716 votes, just over 50% of the votes cast – with Labour's Vincent Lo not far behind on 40%.
Reflecting on the unfolding national picture, Boris said: “All of us who are being elected as MPs tonight have got to listen to our constituents and listen to their concerns.
“I will re-dedicate myself to looking after the interests of this fantastic constituency and I’m proud to be re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Uxbridge & South Ruislip.”
With Labour’s John McDonnell competing for neighbouring Hayes & Harlington and top Tory Nick Hurd for Ruislip, Northwood & Pinner, the Uxbridge triple count was among the most high-profile of the night.
Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, a former Brunel student, held Hayes with 31,796 votes, far ahead of the competition. John graduated in Government and Politics in 1997 as a mature student after leaving school at 17.
Fired up by his victory, John said: “It’s been the greatest honour of my life to represent the community in which I live.
“I give you this assurance: that Labour is ready to form a government now. We take nothing for granted. If we have the opportunity to form a government, we will.”
Conservative candidate Nick Hurd took the seat of Ruislip, Northwood & Pinner with 30,555 votes.
