Holocaust Memorial Day: For a Better Future

HMD_purple_920

Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) takes place each year on 27 January. The theme for 2025 is ‘For a Better Future’. This year is particularly significant as we mark 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest of the Nazi concentration camps, and 30 years since the genocide in Bosnia.

The day stands as a time for everyone to remember the millions of Jewish people and members of other minority groups murdered in the Holocaust, under Nazi persecution. We also take the time to reflect on subsequent genocides and present-day atrocities across the world.

In commemorating this day, we acknowledge the resilience of individuals from various backgrounds who have endured and are still enduring profound suffering and oppression. It is a time to reflect on how discrimination and persecution still exists and must be resisted.

By recognising the rich tapestry of our global community at Brunel University of London, we reaffirm our commitment to unity, understanding, and the prevention of future atrocities. We stand together to remember the past and to strive ‘for a better future’.
