The Academy of Medical Sciences has awarded a prestigious fellowship to Prof Julia Buckingham CBE, Vice-Chancellor and President of Brunel University London.
Recognised for her continued contributions to medical sciences, Prof Buckingham was selected from more than 400 candidates to be bestowed one of just 50 fellowships.
This year’s fellows were selected for their expertise spanning global health, virology, women’s health, medical statistics, health policy, cancer genetics, allergy and emergency care medicine, among many other fields. New fellows were recognised as making an important contribution to medical science through outstanding leadership, public engagement or supporting the career advancement of junior trainees.
Prof Buckingham, who was recently elected as President of Universities UK, said: “I’m immensely proud to accept this fellowship from The Academy of Medical Sciences, an organisation at the very forefront of championing the UK’s world-class medical research.
“The medical sciences have always been incredibly important to me, so to be recognised in this way comes as a huge honour.”
Professor Mike Spyer, Chair of Council at Brunel University London, said: “This hugely prestigious accolade is fantastic further recognition, if any were needed, of the outstanding contribution Professor Buckingham makes to research in the UK.
“Brunel is fortunate to have a VC that not only leads by example, but who also works tirelessly to help others up the academic ladder.”
The Academy of Medical Sciences is an independent body which represents the diversity of medical science in the UK. Its elected fellows represent the UK’s leading medical scientists from hospitals, academia, industry and public service. This year saw it elect its highest ever percentage of women, with 39 per cent of new fellowships – 19 in total – going to female candidates.
