Another outstanding year of volunteering by Brunel students and staff was celebrated with a black-tie 'Night in Vegas' at the Brunel Volunteers Awards 2019, held on campus last Friday.
Set to live piano and barbershop entertainment, the event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Hillingdon, Councillor David Yarrow and Mary O'Connor MBE, together with numerous local charities – 120 guests in all.
Over the 2018/19 academic year, 667 Brunel students gave 17,000 hours of their time to good causes through volunteering. Out of those, 155 students notched up enough hours to earn a Brunel Volunteers Award. Forty-seven students achieved gold awards for volunteering 100 hours or more, 44 earned silver awards for completing 50 hours and 64 received bronze awards for giving 25 hours of their time.
The main awards went to:
- Girl Guiding UK – 1st Hillingdon Guides are Charity of the Year 2019, collected by Captain Brenda Tilbury
- Visual effects and motion graphics student Toby Sanderson, Winner of Volunteer of the Year
- Law student Elsa Baudart, Highly Commended for the Volunteer of the Year
- Research Institutes administrator Matthew Sarfas, Staff Volunteering Award
- Mechanical engineering with aeronautics student Asad Parkar for his exceptional dedication to volunteering activities during his four years as a Brunel student.
"This has been an outstanding year for Brunel Volunteers," said Brunel University London's Nancy Rawlings, Volunteers Manager for the 2000-strong network of philanthropic students. "I would like to thank all students and staff who have supported Brunel Volunteers and who have given their time so freely to help and support others within the local Hillingdon community, on campus and beyond."
Musical entertainment was provided by pianist and Brunel Musician in Residence Sally Goodworth and singers from Brunel University Barbershop (BUBS).
