The London Borough of Hillingdon is a large area of West London, England, formed from the districts of Hayes and Harlington, Ruislip-Northwood, Uxbridge, and Yiewsley and West Drayton in the ceremonial county of Middlesex. The council is responsible for housing, social services, street cleaning, waste disposal, roads, local planning, and many arts and leisure services.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

In this role, you support the two trained Community Panel Members (CPM) to create a tailor-made individual contract, to repair the harm caused by children between 10-17 years old that has pleaded guilty to all or at least one of the offences for which they are convicted to. As a Panel Member, you will learn about restorative justice principles and practices, develop skills in conflict resolution and mediation, also enhancing your communication, active listening and effective questioning skills.

Typical duties include:

  • Supporting restorative justice meetings between young offenders, victims (if willing to participate), and other affected parties as appropriate
  • Helping to create a safe and respectful environment for dialogue, ensuring that all participants have the opportunity to share their perspectives
  • Reviewing relevant information such as the nature of the offence, the circumstances surrounding it, the offender's background, and any victim impact statements
  • Assisting CPMs in drafting individual contracts that outline the specific obligations and responsibilities of the young offender to repair the harm caused by their actions

Please note, the organisation would like you to commit for an overall two years and expect you to have some availability during the week, and flexibility with evenings.
