The Literacy Pirates – Literacy Support Volunteer

Details of the Charity:

The Literacy Pirates is an educational charity working to develop the literacy, confidence and perseverance of young people in Hackney, Haringey and online, so that they have great achievements both in school and in the world beyond. The organisation works with local schools, families and volunteers to deliver learning projects such as published books, films, apps, and so on.

Details of the Volunteering Opportunity:

In this role you will be assisting the teacher with reading and writing sessions to encourage young people to read and engage them in creative writing and other literacy-related projects. As a Literacy Support Volunteer, you will develop your teaching and communication skills, as well as enhance your professional development learning unique approaches to engage and inspire learners.

Typical duties include:

  • Assisting with the reading sessions and discussion comprehension
  • Facilitating writing exercises to explore imagination through storytelling and writing
  • Offering encouragement to young people to share their thoughts and ideas
  • Fostering a love for reading and academic support when needed

Please note, the organisation would like you to commit to a minimum of 3 months.
