Brunel Hyphen Scholarship - Law

The Brunel Law School (BLS), in partnership with Brunel alumna Eniola Aluko MBE and Hyphen Sports, are providing an outstanding scholarship to UK and international (including EU) students enrolling onto the full-time International Human Rights Law LLM in September 2024 or January 2025 of the 2024/25 academic year.

To be considered, here's what you will need to do:

• Apply for the International Human Rights Law LLM programme in the usual way.
• Complete the Hyphen scholarship application no later than Friday 23 August 2024.

Successful awardees may be expected to undertake specified duties as Brunel Ambassadors for the Brunel Law School (BLS) and Hyphen. Activities might involve representing the Law programme at internal and external events. Scholarship winners will be contacted by the Law Department, Hyphen Team or Brunel Marketing team as and when participation is required.

Award details

1. Award details

Value: The Brunel Hyphen Law Scholarship offers a £4,500 fee waiver to three full-time postgraduate students on the International Human Rights Law LLM programme.

The International Human Rights Law LLM is a one year course and the tuition fee waiver will be applied to one year only.

How many: 3 scholarships in total.

Application process:

1. Applicants must apply for the International Human Rights Law LLM programme in the usual way.
2. Applicants should then complete the Hyphen scholarship application no later than the deadline stated below:

The application will comprise of a statement of no more than 500 words reflecting on the applicant’s motivation, future plans and how the scholarship would help their career plans.

We will not be able to consider incomplete or late applications.

3. Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to be considered for the scholarship, the Hyphen scholarship allocation panel will then shortlist applicants based on their submitted application.

2. Eligibility

To be eligible for a Brunel Hyphen Law Scholarship applicants must:

2.1 Apply and fulfil the entry criteria for admission to the Brunel International Human Rights Law LLM programme. Awards will be only made to the candidates holding an offer of a place on the above full-time programme.

2.2 Be in receipt of an offer to study on the International Human Rights Law LLM programme starting in September 2024 or January 2025.

2.3 Complete the scholarship application form comprising of an supporting statement of no more than 500 words.

Those not eligible for this Scholarship

• Applicants who will not commence their course in the upcoming academic year - applicants holding offers for deferred entry will be required to submit a fresh scholarship application for their deferred month of study. Applicants who defer to a new academic year will not be considered for a scholarship and will be required to complete a fresh scholarship application form and be considered for a scholarship in the year they start their course.
• Applicants applying to the Brunel Pathway College (BPC) or the Brunel Language Centre (BLC).

Allocation

3. Allocation

3.1 The Law Department and the Hyphen scholarship allocation panel will assess applications on a regular basis throughout the year. All scholarship applications will be rigorously assessed against a set of standard criteria, and applicants must pass a rigorous selection and transparent evaluation process that includes a written statement which the members of the Hyphen scholarship allocation panel will review.

3.2 The Hyphen scholarship allocation panel will be responsible for initiating and managing communication with applicants, alongside the Scholarship team. They will be screening and assessing all applications, and submit their recommendation to the panel. The panel will be responsible for producing a final list for eligible awardees.

3.3 Applications for scholarships will be considered on the balance of eligibility criteria met by each applicant.

3.4 The decision of the Hyphen scholarship allocation panel is final. The University will not accept any appeals in respect of the decisions made by the Hyphen scholarship allocation panel.

3.5 Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria at the time of allocation will be considered for scholarships using the information provided at the time of their course application only and cannot be considered should their circumstances change during the course of their studies. Scholarships cannot be backdated.

3.6 Scholarships are awarded for the September and January entry of the academic year 2024/25 only and cannot be deferred to later months or years of entry. Course applicants who intend to defer their studies will lose any award they have been made and must re-apply for a scholarship in the year they will begin their studies.

3.7 Course applicants who intend to start in January should apply for the January scholarship using the correct application form, applicants who incorrectly apply using the September scholarship application will not be considered and will have to apply again.

3.8 Scholarships will be allocated provisionally throughout the year and formally awarded twice a year. In August/September for the September intake and in December for the January intake.

Conditions of payment

4. Conditions of Payment

4.1 Scholarships are awarded for the academic year 2024/25 only and cannot be deferred. Applicants who intend to defer their studies must re-apply for a scholarship in the year they will begin their studies.

4.2 Scholarship awardees will be responsible for paying the remainder of their tuition fees after the scholarship contribution is deducted from the total fees for the academic year.

4.3 The scholarship does not replace the deposit of £5,000 for international students. All international scholarship winners will need to pay the £5,000 deposit for their course in order to receive an unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS). The amount of their scholarship will be deducted from the remaining fees. This applies to overseas fee paying students only.

4.4 The fee waiver will only be applied provided the student is fully enrolled at the University on the International Human Rights Law LLM programme, which includes having had their qualifications and other documentation verified and checked, and then completing the University enrolment procedures. This includes holding the correct visa to study, if appropriate.

4.5 The fee waiver will be applied be applied to the first year of study only.

4.6 Awarded scholars are excluded from all other scholarships and tuition fee waivers with the exception of the Graduate Discount, the Postgraduate Academic Excellence Scholarship and the Early Payment Discount.

The order of discounts will be applied as follows:

1. Scholarship/bursary fee waiver. If you have a fee waiver and the Postgraduate Taught Academic Excellence Scholarship, we will apply the fee waiver first.
2. 10% Brunel Alumni Family Discount or Brunel Family Discount applied to the net tuition fee (if applicable).
3. 15% Graduate discount applied to the net tuition fee (if applicable).
4. 2% Early payment discount applied to the net tuition fee (if applicable).

4.7 Scholarship awardees who have already paid the full course fees can visit the Student Centre to request a refund of any over payment; once they have met all conditions of their offer and enrolled onto their course in person.

Withdrawal of a scholarship

5. Withdrawal of a scholarship

5.1 Misleading information: The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.

5.2 Mode of Attendance Change: If a student changes to different mode of study, their eligibility for a scholarship will be reviewed. The scholarship will be withdrawn if the change is from full time to part time or distance learning.

5.3 Changing course: If a student transfers to a course outside the International Human Rights Law LLM programme the scholarship will be withdrawn.

5.4 Amendment of Fee Waivers: Fee waivers are applied at the start of the academic year as part/all of a scholarship entitlement and will not be amended once the fee waiver has been processed. Any tuition fee liability remaining after fee waivers are applied would therefore be calculated in accordance with the Student Financial Policy.

5.5 Abeyance/Temporary Withdrawal: A student who takes a period of temporary withdrawal (abeyance) and who is in receipt of a scholarship award would cease to receive scholarship payments whilst temporarily withdrawn. Scholarship payments made prior to temporarily withdrawing will not generally be requested to be repaid and remaining payments would generally be paid once the student returns to complete that level of study.

5.6 Suspension of Study: Should a student be suspended for any reason, scholarship payments would be withdrawn and consideration of reinstatement will be dependent on the disciplinary outcome.

5.7 Repeat/Extended Study: Repeat periods of study, and periods of temporary withdrawal that result in extended periods of study, are not supported by additional scholarship payments. Scholarship entitlement is for the maximum duration of each award and entitlement is not extended if overall course duration alters.

5.8 Withdrawal from Study: A student who withdraws from their programme prior to completion and who is in receipt of a scholarship award will not normally be requested to repay scholarship payments made up to the point of withdrawal; however, entitlement to all future scholarship payments and/or adjustments, cease immediately when a student withdraws from Brunel University London.
