College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences (CEDPS) Academic Excellence Scholarship 2024/25

The College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences (CEDPS) Academic Excellence Scholarship is a cash award available to full-time students commencing specified undergraduate courses in the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences.

No application is required. You'll be considered automatically based on the information supplied in your course application.

Award details

Value: £2,000 cash each year for a maximum of three years for a full time course and for a maximum of three years for a sandwich course. The scholarship will only be paid once for each eligible level of study, subject to normal progression criteria having been met (additional payments will not be made during a repeating year, regardless of the reason for repetition).

Scholarship holders may be requested to represent Brunel at various promotional activities throughout their time at the University. Participation is not mandatory and scholarship holders may be contacted with invitations to participate in activities such as surveys, focus groups and interviews, in order to evaluate the University’s financial support package. Scholarship holders will be contacted as and when participation is required. If a student chooses not to participate, their scholarship award will not be affected.

Data pertaining to scholarship holders such as: progression rates, degree attainment, degree completion, and graduate outcomes may also be analysed in order to understand the effectiveness of bursaries and scholarships. This data may also be linked to other data already held by the University for the purpose of better understanding the impact of bursaries and scholarships on under-represented groups. How many: Unlimited

Application process: There is no separate application, all students will be considered for the scholarship automatically based on the information supplied in their course application. Awards will be made by the Scholarship Allocation Panel in early October, following publication of the UK A Level examination results.

Eligibility

Scholarships will be awarded to all those applicants who meet the following eligibility criteria:

• • Must hold an offer of a place on a full time Undergraduate course within the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences (including placement routes and undergraduate integrated Masters programmes but excluding Integrated Foundation courses), a list of eligible courses can be found in appendix 1.
  • This includes offers made through UCAS Clearing. Clearing applicants must ensure that they inform the Student Loans Company (SLC) at the earliest opportunity that they are attending Brunel University of London. The SLC must notify Brunel University of London by 27^th September 2024. Failure to do this will result in the applicant not being considered for the award.
  • Offer must be for FHEQ Level 4 (Year 1) of the course.
  • Offer must be ‘Unconditional Firm’ (UF) by the date the Scholarship Allocation Panel make their awards (i.e. applicant must have met all offer conditions and firmly accepted the place).
  • Must commence the course in the upcoming academic year (applicants for deferred entry will be considered for a scholarship in the year they start their course and not in the year of their course application).
  • Must achieve or exceed one of the following qualifications and grades*:
    
    • 3 A Levels with grades AAB or above
    • International Baccalaureate Diploma with 33 points or above
    • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma with grades D*D*D*or above
    • 3 Scottish Advanced Highers with grades AAB or above
    • Higher Irish Leaving Certificate from 5 subjects with grades H2, H2, H2, H3, H3 (or AAABB from the pre-2017 grading system) or above

*(UCAS tariff equivalencies or combinations of qualifications are not acceptable)

Scholarship will be awarded to those who meet the eligibility criteria at the time of allocation. Late or amended results cannot normally be considered.

Those not eligible for this Scholarship:

• Applicants entering a course in the Foundation year, FHEQ Level 5 (Year 2) or FHEQ Level 6 (Year 3).
• Applicants entering a course with Brunel Pathway College (BPC), or who are progressing to a Brunel course from a BPC course.
• Applicants who will not commence their course in the upcoming academic year - applicants holding offers for deferred entry will be considered for a scholarship in the year they start their course and not in the year of their course application.

Allocation

3.1 Eligibility criteria are reviewed annually.

3.2 Applicants are considered for scholarships using the information provided at the time of their application only and cannot be reconsidered should their circumstances change during the course of their studies. Scholarships cannot be backdated.

3.3 Only one scholarship/bursary can be paid to any one student in any one year with the exception of the Care Leaver Bursary. 

3.4 If an applicant is eligible for more than one scholarship/bursary, they will be awarded the one which will be the most financially beneficial across the full course duration.

3.5 Awards will be made by the Scholarship Allocation Panel in early October and successful applicants will be informed by email shortly thereafter. 

3.6 Scholarships are awarded for the current academic year only and cannot be deferred. Applicants who choose to defer their studies will forfeit any awards they have been made but will be considered anew in the year they will begin their studies. 

3.7 The decision of the Scholarship Allocation Panel is final. The University will not accept any appeals in respect of the decisions made by the Panel.

Payment

The Scholarship will be paid in three instalments in each year of a full time course up to a maximum of three years subject to meeting annual progression criteria.

This scholarship is not payable in the Masters year of an integrated Masters degree programme.

Successfully awarded students will be asked to supply relevant UK bank account details to support receipt of the cash payments by the date specified in the award email. 

4.1 Payment dates

For cash scholarship awards, payment will be made as follows:

Payment 1 - 13th December 2024

Payment 2 - 28th February 2025

Payment 3 - 13th June 2025

4.2 Conditions of Payment

Payment will only be made providing the student is fully enrolled at the University on an Undergraduate degree programme of study at the time of the payment. Payment will not be made in the placement year of a sandwich course. The Scholarship will be placed on hold until completion of the placement year and will be reinstated the following academic year. The grade achieved for the placement(s) will not have a bearing on the retention of the award.

N.B.   Payments will be made directly to a UK bank account and therefore students are required to supply accurate bank account details via their eVision account within the requested time. Failure to provide current valid UK Bank account details will result in delayed payment.

Where a scholarship award spans more than one year, students will be written to in September to confirm ongoing eligibility to receive their scholarship award.

4.3 Conditions of remaining on the scholarship

In order to retain their College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences (CEDPS) Academic Excellence Scholarship in subsequent years, students must evidence their Academic Excellence by maintaining an upper Second Class (2:1) profile at the end of FHEQ Level 4 (Year 1) and FHEQ Level 5 (Year 2).  This profile is based on that which must be achieved in order to obtain an Upper Second Class Honours Degree. A student must achieve the requirements set out in Senate Regulation 2 Appendix A.  

Withdrawal of a scholarship

5.1 Misleading information: The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means.

5.2 Changing course: If a student transfers to a course of study outside the College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences the scholarship will be withdrawn. 

5.3 Mode of attendance change:  If a student changes their mode of attendance the scholarship will be withdrawn, i.e. if the change is from full time to part time.

5.4 Changing course and starting again at FHEQ Level 4 (Year 1): Students who commence their studies and subsequently make an alteration that involves starting again at FHEQ Level 4 will not be eligible for a new award against the new course. The existing scholarship will be placed on hold and reinstated once the student commences FHEQ Level 5 subject to meeting the annual scholarship progression criteria outlined in Section 4. If a student changes course within the College of Engineering, Design & Physical Sciences but remains at the same level of study, this will not have an impact on the award. Progression criteria as stipulated above will still apply. 

5.5 Abeyance/Temporary Withdrawal: A student who takes a period of temporary withdrawal (abeyance) and who is in receipt of a scholarship award would cease to receive scholarship payments whilst temporarily withdrawn. Scholarship payments made prior to temporarily withdrawing will not generally be requested to be repaid, and remaining payments will generally be paid once the student returns to complete that level of study.

5.6 Suspension of Study: Should a student be suspended for any reason, scholarship payments will be placed on hold and may be made following return to studies dependent on the disciplinary outcome.

5.7 Repeat/Extended Study: Repeat periods of study, and periods of temporary withdrawal that result in extended periods of study, are not supported by additional scholarship payments. Scholarship entitlement is for the maximum duration of each award and entitlement is not extended if overall course duration alters. 

5.8 Withdrawal from Study: A student who withdraws from their programme prior to completion and who is in receipt of a scholarship award will not normally be requested to repay scholarship payments made up to the point of withdrawal. However, entitlement to all future scholarship payments cease immediately when a student withdraws from Brunel University of London.

5.9 Failure to maintain required academic performance: As detailed in section 4.3, students not maintaining the minimum academic achievement will not be eligible for continuation of the scholarship.
