Strong Representation for Brunel's Social Work Program at JUSWA Conference 2024

The Joint Universities Social Work Association Conference 2024 (JUSWAC) witnessed robust participation from Brunel University’s social work program.

Held at Kingston University on 27-28 June 2024, the conference provided a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and impactful presentations. The Brunel delegation comprised five staff members and seven students showcasing their research and expertise. Here are some highlights from their contributions:

Workshop on Rights-Based Approaches in Community-Based Social Work

Professor Fiona Verity and Dr Cristina Asenjo Palma led an engaging workshop, emphasizing human rights principles in community-based social work.

Embracing Diversity in Ageing: Unveiling Life Histories

Dr Mike Thomas delivered a thought-provoking presentation that explored the life experiences of older racially minoritized and LGBTQ+ individuals.

Evolving Perceptions: Social Workers’ Professional Development and Organizational Cultures

Lesley La Croix’s illuminating presentation delved into the evolving landscape of social work practice and professional growth within organizational contexts.

Transnational Social Workers: Maximizing Unique Potential

Dr Yohai Hakak spearheaded two presentations. The first, titled “The Unique Potential of Transnational Social Workers,” featured collaborative insights from the research team members, Bishal Gurung, Parmjit Dhillon, Sandra Orisabinone, and Tim Magudu.

Working with Parents Across Cultures: A Comparative Group Project

Dr Hakak’s second group presentation explored cross-cultural dynamics in contemporary England. Felicia Benjamin, Tienga Ngale, and Vigneshwar Sailajakumari Kumar made major contributions to this enlightening session.

Participant Perspectives

Parmjit, one of the presenters, described the conference as an unforgettable experience. Despite initial fears, the positive feedback and engagement with their study left a lasting impact. Tienga reflected on the nerve-wracking yet rewarding experience of presenting as a group. The warm reception from the audience affirmed the team’s commitment to social justice work.
