On 5 June 2018, the film “Litter Things Matter” produced by environmental education network
Wastebuster for World Environment Day was released globally. Dr Lesley Henderson acted as script adviser and fed in information from her UK research into public understandings of plastics pollution. In particular she was delighted that Wastebuster CEO Katy Newnham added a special section looking at single use plastics that are popular with children and families such as balloons which are synonymous with birthday celebrations. She was also pleased that the film emphasises how “everyone can make a difference” as her research identified that some people felt their everyday actions did not matter especially if they did not live in close proximity to the ocean.
