Brunelians score medal bonanza at BUCS

Emma Nwofor with a gold medal and PB of 8.27 secs in the 60-metre hurdles at the British Universities Indoor Championships 2018.

Congratulations to our Team Brunel athletes, who brought back four gold, four silver and four bronze medals as well as a host of personal best performances from the weekend’s British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) indoor national athletics championships in Sheffield.

Our men's team finished second and our women's team came third, which combined saw Brunel place as runners-up to arch-rivals Loughborough. Women's Captain and Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences student, Emma Nwofor finished her final BUCS Indoor Championship on a high, with two golds in the 60-metre hurdles and high jump and a bronze in the long jump. Reflecting on her weekend’s work Nwofor said:

I’ve had a stellar indoor season with my new coaches, Linford Christie, Frank Attoh and Lee Grint. As well as my first GB multi-events international, I was absolutely delighted to win three medals at what will be my last BUCS Indoor Championships.

Sport Scholar and Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences student, Lily Beckford also brought home a gold in the 400 metres, both Lily and Emma are coached by Olympic 100-metre champion Linford Christie.

Leading the men’s team was final-year Physiotherapy student and Sports Scholar, Kai Jones who took his second gold from the Indoor Championships for the shot put. Sprinters Luke Dorrell and Marvin Popoola took silver and bronze, respectively in the 200 metres. Silver medals for James Downing in the 800 metres, Ozaze Aghedo in the triple jump and Joseph Lister for pole vault.

Commonwealth Games-bound Sport, Health and Exercise Sciences Amar-Mazigh Aichoun added to his burgeoning collection of BUCS medals with a bronze in the 60-metre dash, while Physiotherapy student James McMurray snatched a further bronze in the 3000 metres.

The team will now return to a heavy period of training in preparation for the BUCS Outdoor Championships, which will be hosted by the Bedford International Stadium over the weekend of 5-7 May, 2018.
