Tell us about your educational and/or career journey since you graduated from Brunel?
Despite graduating in the middle of the pandemic I feel like I've optimised all the opportunities I received at Brunel and I'm super proud of my career path and the way things have played out for me. I initially worked at a small start-up post-graduation for over six months which gave me the opportunity to enter the work space in the UK. After getting the initial work experience I managed to land a senior position at Rakuten Advertising in their Client Servicing team. I've always wanted to be in advertising and thrive in the creative space - this is everything I dreamed of.
What does a typical day at work involve for you?
I manage luxury fashion brands in the affiliate sector. Being in a client facing role, I'm responsible for strategy, relationship building, budget allocation and other facets revolving around how a brand likes to integrate itself into the growing affiliate advertising space.
What’s been the highlight of your career journey so far?
Landing a senior position at Rakuten has definitely been a milestone I have manifested in the past year and I'm super proud of my journey.
How would you say your Brunel experience has helped you to get where you are today?
Brunel definitely gave me access to the people, opportunities and challenges which has shaped my personal growth and professional journey.
Why did you choose to study at Brunel and why would you recommend Brunel to others?
I chose Brunel for the course - MSc Business Intelligence & Digital Marketing (I wanted to study digital marketing with a data spin to it) and for the massive campus.
What is your best memory of studying here?
Going for walks on campus and witnessing sunsets during late summers on the Quad were a pleasant memory during university days.
If you could give one piece of advice to current Brunel students, what would that be?
I'd suggest you look beyond fear and say yes to every opportunity you encounter at university. Whether it's applying for that leadership position, applying for a cheerleading spot, or nominating to become a class rep; say yes to everything. You never know how it might change your life.
What would be your top tip or key advice for new graduates as they begin their career journey after leaving Brunel?
Rejection is definitely redirection. This year has been a huge testimony to this saying. After having applied to many jobs and being rejected from companies I idolised, it felt like the end of the world. Having the right kind of support system and believing in my dreams helped me land my current role in the most exciting company, and I couldn’t be happier.
There really is no substitute for hard work. As cliché as this sounds, working on yourself, constantly learning new skills, and giving your 100% never fails. Always remember you’re just a few No’s away from your Yes with your dream company. Compassion and kindness go a long way. I’ve often been told to stay low-key and not discuss opportunities I’m excited about in public fearing the effects of the evil eye. However, I believe what is meant for you will find its way to you no matter what. So, don’t shy away from helping a junior who needs your help or a friend who needs a referral. Do remember, whatever good you do, the universe gives it back multi-fold.
