Team Principal - Alexander Slimm

Alex Headshot_sm

This is the first year Alex has been involved in Formula Student. He is currently in the 3rd year of his Masters in Mechanical Engineering.

Alex's main focus this year is to improve the teams professional practices. He has brought in new departments and new organisational procedures with the aim to improve communication within the team and target key points at competition.

Alex went on placement last year at Prodrive, in Banbury. Here he enjoyed his time within the chassis design department of the motorsport company. The main project that Alex worked on was the Aston Martin GTE cars. He was fortunate enough to travel to 3 different races last year, 6 hours of Spa and the 4 hours of Silverstone, the 24 hours of Le Mans to spectate and support this team.

Alex is an avid car enthusiast and spends some weekends going to various car events around the UK. He is also found of Downhill Mountain Biking, travelling to his local stages or to Morzine, France. Alex also spends alot of his time playing golf, he’s not very good but he enjoys himself anyway.

This year Georgina was appointed as Powertrain Manager for BR-21 and her main aims will be implementing dual-stage injection as well as calibrating the team's Yahama R6 engine to optimise the performance of BR-21's powertrain.

After her degree, Georgina would be looking for a career in the automotive industry with a focus of optimising engines

Chassis - Jake Haley

Jake is currently a third-year automotive engineering student working towards an MEng. Last year, he spent a year in industry working for AP Racing within the road brakes department.

This is his first-year taking part in formula student where he has been appointed chassis manager. He is looking to refine the design of last year's chassis along with improving the packaging of components.

In his spare time, Jake enjoys playing a variety of video games such as counter strike where he has accumulated an impressive 2,500 hours on the game. A passion for cars has also led to him owning 4 vehicles in the past 3 years, 2 of which definitely didn’t have head gasket problems....

Unsprung - Lorenzo Manni

Lorenzo Headshot_sm

Lorenzo joined Brunel Racing in 2019 and has soon been involved in both the Internal Combustion and Electric Formula Student vehicles. He currently oversees the development and testing of the wheel assembly components of the Internal Combustion BR-21 car while he works on the redesign of hubs and uprights for the Electric BRe2 car.

Lorenzo is a motorsport enthusiast, and this is the reason why he decided to move to the UK, the birth home of motorsport. Since his tender age, he has been a racing fanatic. Having competed in the Italian Karting Championship for years, his one and only goal was to end up in Formula One, either as a driver or an engineer. Unfortunately – or fortunately – his driving skills turned out to be not as good as his engineering ones.

Lorenzo has industry experience gained from different placements. He spent two summers as Test Engineering Intern at Mercedes AMG Petronas F1, where he developed a full understanding of the validation procedures used in the pinnacle category of motorsport. More recently, he completed a placement year at Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains, where he was involved in the design and testing of the F1 power unit. His goals are to bring his experience to the team to deliver better performance and reliability.

Electrical Manager - Chris Hammond

Chris[1]_sm

From: Canterbury, Kent

Course: Electronic and Electrical Engineering BEng

Level: 3

Chris joined Brunel Racing in 2017, as a level 2 student, with BR19, and was immediately appointed Electrical Manager. Throughout the year Chris' focus was on expanding the array of sensors on the car to allow for more thorough data collection.

In the academic year 2018/2019 Chris completed a 12 month placement at Delphi Technologies, with his main focus being on optimising and automating manual test procedures for Engine Control Units. Chris expanded his practical understanding and experience with both hardware and firmware, and has gained a wealth of knowledge pertaining to business in engineering.

In 2019/2020, with BR21, Chris will again be filling the role of Electrical Manager. He will be focussing his time on developing the control systems of the car, building a new wiring loom, and aiding other engineers by providing power to their designs.

In his spare time Chris enjoys travelling, woodworking, designing electronic systems, and working on his own car.

This year Harry has taken on the role of Design & Manufacturing Manager as well as Driver Manager. He'll be ensuring the newly designed components are manufacturable before FS 2020 and putting together a team of drivers.

When he graduates, Harry really wants to work within a Formula 1 team, progressing into a trackside role. In his spare time he enjoys karting with the Motorsport Society and cycling.

Brunel Formula Student team aim to design, build and test a prototype single-seat race car for Formula student. Formula student is a competition event which provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their engineering capabilities in the form of a prototype single-seat race car for autocross or sprint racing. During the event the FS car will undergo rigorous testing in the form of static and dynamic events, viewed by a panel of judges; and continual competition against other Universities across the country.

Brunel Formula Student team always aims for the top and this year hope to achieve that by developing the Brunel FS car from last year. A lot of effort and time is required when developing an FS car, which is why Motorsport Students at Brunel are encouraged to participate. A team of students usually run by department leader’s work together to improve the FS car over the course of the year.
