As part of the inaugural research seminar organised by the International Dispute Resolution Research Group, Dr Filip Balcerzak will present his latest book titled Renewable Energy Arbitration – Quo Vadis? Implications of the Spanish Saga for International Investment Law, published by BRILL in 2023. The book examines the challenges currently facing international investment law in the renewable energy sector, drawing on an analysis of 21 arbitral awards from the "Spanish saga" cases. It explores key questions, such as the factors behind the unprecedented number of investor-state arbitrations filed against Spain, the potential impact of awards against Spain on future cases involving other states, and the legal grounds in international law that could form the basis for investors' claims in the renewable energy sector. Dr Filip Balcerzak provides valuable insights and lessons for the future, offering guidance for both adjudicators of renewable energy disputes and policymakers.
