Biomedical Engineering aims to lead research in the growing multi-disciplinary field of advanced technology as devices, processes and modelling to advance health through improvements in therapy, diagnosis, screening, monitoring and rehabilitation. Leading international expertise from across engineering and science, biology, computing and the clinical professions output innovative world-class solutions in practice.
The areas of focus is on smart micro-devices and systems for monitoring, diagnosis and therapy for applications with compatible technology applied to the body, tissues and cells ranging from first point of care to tertiary care. The area of sensors and diagnostics is a focus area for growth. In primary care the teams can capitalise on a significant application gap for which research funding is increasing from a number of prominent sources.
Current investigations are within cardiovascular, ENT and otology, dentistry, GP practice, telemedicine, remote diagnosis, and healthcare and social care. Exciting research in robotic surgical tools, implants in otology and cardiology, telemedicine in primary care practice, automated screening techniques are leading the state of the art. There is a visiting team of leading clinical professors in otology, GP practice and cardiovascular medicine who provide valuable support to deliver appropriate results into practice.
Biomedical engineering research at Brunel is led by multidiscipline professional teams of engineers, scientists and clinicians.
