Urban waste as a resource in civil engineering
Our research in this area looks into the feasibility of circular management of urban wastes and environmental sustainability of supply chains in construction. Our experts in particular pursue the value added development of waste resources from various sectors, e.g. domestic wastes, industrial wastes, agricultural wastes and demolition wastes.
We have been active in many complex projects. For instance, EU FP7 projects ‘WOODRUB’: Utilisation of recovered wood and rubber for alternative composite products; ‘RubWPC’: Rubber fusion of wood plastic composites to make functional composites for building applications; ‘ReWoBioRef’: Mobilisation and utilisation of Recovered Wood for lignocellulosic BioRefinery processes; and Horizon 2020 projects ‘Green INSTUCT’: Green Integrated Structural Elements for Retrofitting and New Construction of Buildings”; ‘SMART-Plant: Scale-up of low-carbon footprint Material Recovery Techniques in existing wastewater treatment Plants.
