Sport facilities at Brunel

Brunel offers some of the finest learning and sport facilities in the UK for you to study, train and keep active.

Many of the practical sessions in our sports science courses take place in our physiology and biomechanics laboratories which give you the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of experimental techniques relevant to sports science disciplines.

Whatever sport you’re passionate about, you’ll find the opportunity to pursue it at Brunel through our wide range on indoor and outdoor sport facilities.

Physiology Laboratory

Our Physiology Laboratory is equipped with cycle (mechanically and electro-magnetically braked), rowing and treadmill ergometers, online breath by breath gas analysis systems and blood analysers for various metabolites including lactate, glucose and blood gases. The lab also boasts an environmental chamber, providing temperatures from 0°C up to 50°C.

We have a dedicated Respiratory Lung Function Laboratory with full pulmonary function test equipment as well as a body plethysmograph (Body Box) – one of only a few sports science laboratories in the country to do so.

The division also benefits from Brunel’s Human Tissue license – awarded by the Human Tissue Authority – allowing the storage of blood, muscle, urine, saliva samples for future further analysis.

Biomechanics Laboratory

Our Biomechanics Laboratories is equipped with 3D real-time motion capture as well as pressure platforms, force platforms and an instrumented treadmill containing force platforms.

We also have isokinetic dynamometry equipment and electromyography equipment. Performance analysis software is available for individual and team analysis of key performance indicators.

Indoor Athletics Centre

Our multi-million pound Indoor Athletics Centre (IAC) is the centrepiece of our performance sport facilities. As one of the best indoor training facilities in the country, the IAC is a UK Athletics Regional Performance Centre and is the chosen training venue for many of the finest athletes in the world such as by Olympic legend Usain Bolt.

The IAC facilities include 132m six-lane sprints and hurdles straight, two long jump/triple jump pits, pole vault area, high jump area, 25 metre plyometric surface, strength and conditioning area, six lifting platforms, meeting room and lecture room with full media facilities. The centre also is home to Uxbridge Physiotherapy, providing support services to students.

Sports complex

Our Sports Park has a 400-metre athletics track with tennis and netball courts, pitches for football, rugby and hockey and an FA-registered 3G pitch.

Our Athletics Arena is certified to IAAF standards and includes a six-lane 400m synthetic porous track, high jump and long and triple jump areas, and full throwing facilities.

Our popular synthetic and 3G surfaces are ideal year-round to play a number of sports including football, hockey and rugby. These surfaces can host full size matches and well as the smaller versions of the sports mentioned.

Other facilities on the Sports Park include six hard tennis courts, four outdoor netball courts and a very high standard grass pitch for football and rugby.

Sports hall and indoor netball hall

We have two multi-purpose sports halls and one netball hall suitable for basketball, badminton, netball, volleyball, martial arts as well as many other sports. Our flexible indoor halls are ideal for casual users, local clubs and international teams.

Our sports halls can cater for four badminton courts, one full sized basketball court and half court options, one futsal full size, one volleyball court and cricket nets. Our sports hall also houses an indoor climbing wall and pump room, which is rated in the top ten in the country by the BMC.

Squash courts

We have four recently refurbished squash courts with a viewing gallery catering for casual, league and match requirements. Our courts are available for public membership or casual use. Squash leagues are run for staff, students and members.
