Overview

The College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (CHMLS) has a long and successful track record in the education and training of allied health professionals, which is now expanding to include undergraduate medicine and nursing awards.

This new programme is available to internal and external applicants including our clinical partners and collaborators who accept students on clinical placements.

PgCert in Clinical Education will register its first cohort in September 2023 for the academic year 2023-24, the course will run part-time for 12 months.

MSc and PgDip will have their first intake in September 2024.

The programme content may be offered as:

  • A staged / stepwise approach to academic credit acquisition and awards,
  • Stand-alone modules for CPD and credit accumulation for a FHEQ level 7 awards, i.e. faculty development for the delivery of our medicine, nursing and allied health and social care programmes, i.e. associate student registration.

The College has established good relationships between health professional programmes and NHS partners and this is degree represents;

  • A good foundation for research capability to furnish the research elements for dissertation
  • An opportunity for collaborative projects with our partners for NHS improvement.
  • An emphasise the multi-professional and diverse nature of the programme, i.e. open to all the medical and health professions, reflecting today’s NHS
  • An articulation of the Health Education England pathway and framework options for learning, i.e. education, communication, simulation, digital clinical education, business and leadership in clinical contexts, research.

This programme is specifically for;

  • Recent graduates interested in further training,
  • Experienced clinical practitioners (without a Masters’ degree) requiring and / or have an interest in, knowledge and skills development, in order to contribute to higher education and for career progression. Accordingly, we aspire to support our medicine and health professional programmes, i.e. Brunel colleagues, clinical educators that train our students in practice.
  • International students who are attracted to Brunel University London from the CHMLS expanding global network,
  • Our existing Brunel colleagues, g. the Medical Education Fellows who are contributing to the MBBS learning and teaching.

Careers and your future

Graduates of a Masters in Clinical Education go on to be successful in the various educational roles enhancing pedagogic practice within professional environments.

The award can be the springboard for leadership opportunities within clinical and teaching positions - some graduates pursue further research including doctoral theses.

EU and International entry requirements

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must prove knowledge of the English language so that we can issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS). To do this, you will need an IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test pass gained from a test centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and on the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) list. This must have been taken and passed within two years from the date the CAS is made.

English language requirements

  • IELTS: 7 (min 6.5 in all areas)
  • Pearson: 64 (59 in all subscores)
  • BrunELT: 68% (63% in all areas)
  • TOEFL: 98 (min 23 in all areas)

Should you wish to take a pre-sessional English course to improve your English prior to starting your degree course, you must sit the test at an approved SELT provider for the same reason. We offer our own BrunELT English test and have pre-sessional English language courses for students who do not meet requirements or who wish to improve their English. Teaching and learning

The format for delivery is a blended learning approach:

  • Students are expected to engage with a wide variety of material (e.g. pre-recorded lectures, group work, tutorials simulations, reading material, videos), with regular interactive sessions available face-to-face and online.
  • To capitalise on the skills learned in online conferencing technologies, thereby future-proofing academic practice in the event of a future response to government-enforced ‘lockdown’
  • The application of recognised methods of learning delivery and assessment, including credentialing of continuing professional education, aiming to encourage our clinical teachers in their personal development.
  • The choice of blended delivery will allow accessibility to learning:

    (a) for the diverse professional and social backgrounds to enrich the learning experience, and

    (b) to capitalise on participants’ pedagogic practice for making connections between theory and practice.

Assessment and feedback

The programme equips you with the essential skills to be a clinical educator who can adapt to changes in pedagogic practice.

This is reflected in the assessment profile, by enabling you to:

  • Apply educational theories to challenge and support the development of learner competence in health professions in different contexts.
  • Encourage scholarly evaluation, critical analysis and reflection of established practice and initiatives.
  • Design and develop curriculum to ensure equality, diversity and inclusivity.
  • Design and appraise assessment modalities, evaluating the validity, reliability, feasibility, acceptability, cost-effectiveness, impact on the learner experience.
  • Design and deliver inter-professional and multi-professional learning opportunities to reflect diversity of professional practice.
  • Apply contemporary learning technologies in clinical professions education
  • Design research approaches in a discrete area of practice using analytical skills to explore the relationships between educational theory and practice, in order to contribute to the knowledge and practice.
