Overview

This degree combines a broad education in engineering, engineering management and business, equipping you with the analytical tools and techniques to understand the processes and technologies required across the engineering sector.  Essentially an engineering programme with a business theme, it will give you the general scientific, mathematical and technical skills required not only to understand engineering designs and systems but also to develop key management skills, business model development and entrepreneurship, alongside financial management, accounting and project management.

Practical projects will enhance formal systems thinking and an optional placement year in industry will boost your practical engineering knowledge and employability. Integral to the programme are elements of computer science, embedded systems, digital electronics, data analysis, artificial intelligence and machine learning, sensor systems and robotics, as well as other topics studied across all programmes, such as employability skills. Optional modules can be taken from all Brunel’s engineering departments giving you the chance to gain additional expertise in civil, mechanical, aerospace and chemical engineering.

The BEng Engineering with Business is a three year undergraduate course (or four years including a placement year) leading to a bachelor's degree, but we also offer a four year MEng Engineering with Business (or five years including a placement year) which awards a master's degree.

Course content

Compulsory

  • Engineering Practice

    Aims: To develop the skills required by students studying in all engineering disciplines, thereby supporting their journey through Higher Education and into their professional life with the intention of maximising their employability. Skills development in the following areas will be addressed: problem solving; personal development; professional development; career planning; basic engineering design; introductory project management; communication; working in inclusive teams; health and safety; security.

  • Engineering Systems and Energy 1

    Aims: To provide a grounding in concepts of measurement and uncertainty; to provide knowledge about applied physics relations that govern engineering systems within their boundaries and via their variables of interaction; to establish ability to define system boundaries and apply relevant simple models.

  • Data and Information

    This teaching module aims to provide students with an introduction to different kinds of data and the means by which it can be collected, stored, retrieved, analysed and then communicated in order to achieve the goal of satisfying user information needs.

  • Internet and Network Technologies

    This module introduces the technological underpinnings of the internet and to discuss key internet working hardware and software technologies

  • Mathematics for Computer Systems

    The aim of this module is to develop students’ ability to understand and apply fundamental methods of engineering mathematics that are relevant to computer systems.

  • Introduction to Electronic and Computer Systems

    Students study the basic principles of computer system architecture design and operation, and to become acquainted with main interpreted programming languages.

  • Introduction to Accounting and Financial Management

    The module introduces students to the essential concepts of accounting and financial management. As the foundation of all other accounting modules, you will study how financial information is prepared, communicated and used. You will develop skills in critically evaluating and appreciating the importance of the accounting and finance function within organisations particularly in connection with business decision making. Students will learn how to: prepare a set of essential financial statements for a business, prepare information for business planning - such as budgets, prepare information for decision making using techniques such as cost, volume, profit analysis and investment appraisal techniques.

  • Microcontroller Principles

    Aims: To develop an understanding of computer architecture from an engineering perspective; to develop the underlying knowledge and skills appropriate to today’s systems and interfacing, including the study of microcontroller system design, circuits and transducers to which the microcontroller must interface, and the embedded system programming in assembly.

  • Sensors and Automation
    This module aims to introduce the principles of computer control and sensors and gain skills in automation and control.
  • Data Networks and Cybersecurity
    This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding to successfully appreciate, create and manage different networks depending on the various needs of the hosting environment, and to develop knowledge and understanding of the fundamental issues and methods for maintenance of data security in servers and networks, and in particular of Internet traffic.
  • Microcontroller Group Design Project
  • Professional Practices and Business for Engineers
    This module aims to develop understanding of the business aspects of engineering enterprise and the provision of value through enterprise operations, and to enhance student preparedness for work placement and employment.
  • Engineering Design and Manufacturing for Business

  • Project Management (MG2130)
    This module offers opportunity to examine the approaches, practices, contributions and skills involved in project management. Responsibilities for projects involve ability to analyse business needs, design solutions, plan, test, and co-ordinate implementation, being aware of the human factor requirements and the use of computer-based information system tools.

  • Individual Project
    The project aims to provide students with the opportunity to design, execute, report and demonstrate a substantial individual project in a professional manner, and to further develop their communication, planning, time management, research and development skills and initiative.
  • Engineering Management and Quality Engineering

    The module aims to develop understanding of managing key processes and projects in engineering with a specific focus on principles/ techniques for managing the quality of Engineering systems.

  • Entrepreneurship and Small Business Ventures

    This module provides an integrated and critical analysis of entrepreneurship and small business management related theories and frameworks underpinning the practice and policy of entrepreneurship and small business management. It will enable you to draw on evidence and contemporary research to explore entrepreneurial value creation and capture, and the imperatives of innovative new technologies on small business growth, as well as identify and evaluate the opportunities and distinctive challenges faced by entrepreneurs and their firms.

  • Embedded Systems
    This module aims to illustrate and develop an understanding of the various engineering, scientific and economic tradeoffs necessary in the design and implementation of embedded systems, and to provide familiarity and experience with a range of architectural techniques, design methodologies and their applications and suitability for some embedded systems such as FPGAs.
  • Design of Internet of Things
    This module aims to develop knowledge and understanding of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and methods with which IoT-enabled devices communicate and exchange, compute and visualise data gathered using the range of sensors and actuators available to them.
  • Big Data Analytics
    The main aim of this module is to familiarise students with the key concepts in Big Data Analytics, enabling the students to identify appropriate advanced statistical methodologies to gain insights in process plant operations. Students will be exposed to the practical use of advanced statistical packages (e.g. R) to consolidate their understanding.
  • Introduction to AI applications in Engineering

  • Applied Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

    Students develop knowledge and skills in developing and applying artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, techniques, and methodologies.

  • Project Planning, Procurement and Risk

    Aims:  To provide knowledge and awareness of project feasibility, management theory, construction procurement, risk management and project planning; to provide the know-how and confidence in the application of management procedures for the delivery of civil engineering projects; to develop understanding of how effective project management contributes to sustainable development, such as by using SDG indicators measurable at project level, notably SDG 8 (Decent Work & Economic Growth) and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production).

  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (QCF) DDM in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
  • BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (RQF) DDM in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering.
  • BTEC Level 3 Diploma (QCF) / BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (RQF) DM in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering AND A-Level at grade B in one of the following subjects; Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science, Electronics or Design and Technology.

GCSE English equivalent SL 5 or HL 4 and Mathematics SL 4 or HL 4.
  • Obtain a minimum of 120 UCAS tariff points in the Access to HE Diploma in Engineering, Computing & IT or Information Technology with 45 credits at Level 3.
  • T levels: Merit Overall in Engineering, Manufacturing and Processing & Control. Other T level subjects may be considered, please contact the admissions office for further information.

EU and International entry requirements

If you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you must prove knowledge of the English language so that we can issue you a Certificate of Acceptance for Study (CAS). To do this, you will need an IELTS for UKVI or Trinity SELT test pass gained from a test centre approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and on the Secure English Language Testing (SELT) list. This must have been taken and passed within two years from the date the CAS is made.

Fees quoted are per year and may be subject to an annual increase. Home undergraduate student fees are regulated and are currently capped at £9,535 per year; any changes will be subject to changes in government policy. Teaching and learning

Foundational knowledge in both subject areas is delivered by lectures and seminars, while hands-on workshops provide practical and experimental learning sessions in developing engineering design and business strategies. 

Assessment and feedback

You will be assessed by a combination of coursework, examinations, portfolio development and peer assessment.
