Research opportunities for students

We welcome PhD applications and our doctoral students are valued members of our community.

The Inclusive Design Research Group carries out research on how various stakeholders (e.g., designers, users, clients), different disciplines (e.g., design, engineering, psychology, architecture) and emerging technologies (e.g., AR, VR, IoT, artificial intelligence) help contribute to human-centred design and inclusive processes and outcomes, so as to benefit the widest possible audience and contribute to sustainable development. Broad areas to pursue doctoral research with this group include:

  • Human-centred Design/Inclusive design philosophy and theories
  • Inclusive Design processes and methods
  • Enabling technologies and their roles for inclusion
  • Co-design and open innovation
  • Inclusive Design/Engineering education

Specifically, we welcome PhD applicants to explore the following topics:

  • Technology-enabled emotional companionship for eldercare
  • The role of sound in people’s experience of smart products and services
  • The value of co-design
  • Innovation inspired by disability

Our funded studentships become available at different times of the year. Please keep checking our page regularly to see the latest funded opportunities. We also advertise all our funded studentships as soon as they become available on the @BrunelResearch twitter account.
