Skunks
Silver Jubilee 2003
A
mixed weekend as far as results went for STD1 but a great
opportunity to practice our new zone d and to work on coming
back from behind, and holding the lead. Plus we got some silver
wear!! Winning the plate against a very experienced Spit.
Very cool to play in a final in front of so many people.
STD2
had a good weekend too. Playing some solid ultimate but failing
to convert all their chances. They finished 23 out of 24,
at least they won one match!
Surrey
Slingers Xmas Tourny 2002
We
entered two mixed ability teams into this one. Ten out of
ten for Matts Xmas present costume and for the carols sung
by santas toy dildo. This festive effort got us the xmas spirit
award, which I think Andy R took home with him!
Seasonal
Turkey Dinners finished higher than Toy Dildo but well played
to everyone. Especially Joe who got most improved player.
If only he was a fresher!
A
special well done also to Kevin Noble who won himself a matching
scar to his brothers doing Face your Fear. Congratulations
to Sally for getting so drunk she was sick out the window
on the way home!
Regionals,
National Qualifiers 2002
Brunel
STD1 qualified by coming a respectable third down in Brighton.
Bring on the nationals. This the first time Brunel has ever
qualified!
We
had some fantastic matches and after a shaky semi vs Sublime
we kicked ass against Imperial in the 3rdv4th playoff.
This
was also the tournament when Alex Noble split his chin taking
an amazing layout from riches dump pass. Sweet grab Al but
we were 10-1 up and there was about 5 seconds to go.
Brunel
STD2 had a great tourny too and I'll try and get Grant to
write some sort of report on how it all happened.
Brunel
Beast Indoors 2002
Storming.
A fantastically organised tournament by Lozza. Brunel STD1
played out of their skins and beat Fever in the groups stage.
We went on to meet them in the final but lost out. This is
the highest Brunel have finished in any tournament.
We
also did well to field a STD2 and STD3 team which is great
for the future of the club.
Sheffield
Beginners Indoors 2002
The
weekend got off to slightly shakey start as communication
issues ensured that fewer beginners were able to make the
weekend than were on the original list. Undeterred, the remaining
team set off for Sheffield and their first experience of an
indoors ultimate tournament.
We
were seeded 15 out of 16 teams, so faced a tough challenge
in a pool with teams seeded above us. Our first match was
against the Skunks team from Southampton. The Skunk's had
very good disc skills, were very fast and well organised.
We struggled to compete and lost by a reasonable margin, but
we did manage to score a couple of points.
The
next pool match was against York Ultimate's second beginners
team. This match was closer than our first but York extended
their lead towards the end of the game and we could not keep
up. We had a close third match against the Warwick Bears team
and ended up losing by one point. After the three pool games
we kept our seeding of 15th.
The
last game of the day on Saturday was a crossover match between
places 2 vs 15. The second placed team were York Ultimate's
first beginners team. Their permitted experienced players
included players who have recently represented English club
teams at the world club championships so we knew that it would
be a tough match. They took a steady three point lead on us
right from the start of the match but we started to work better
as team and managed to take three points to draw level. They
admitted after the game that this had got them slightly worried,
but their true quality shined through and we had no answer
when they stepped up a gear.
At the end of the first days play we were still to win a game
but we were learning to play better as a team and had scored
at least a few points in every match we played. After a curry
in Broomhill the entire Brunel squad set off for the Sheffield
University Students Union bar for the serious part of the
weekend, drinking and partying. We started off in in the union
bar where the drinking games began in earnest, culminating
in James drinking a mixture of snakebite and black, Guinness
and Baileys. In the mean time Malcolm took on the role a of
ticket tout shifting a few excess tickets for the club and
Martin managed to win a t-shirt by quoting Alan Partridge
to maniac with a roving microphone who had decided to hassle
us. We
then rolled on to 'Pop Tarts', much of which was a blur of
drinking and dancing.
Luckily
the clocks had gone back giving us all an extra hour to get
over the nights drinking and ready ourselves for the first
game on Sunday morning, a crossover between 10 and 15 place.
The 10th placed team were our tournament hosts, the Sheffield
Phat Ed's second beginners team. This game was extremely close
throughout and finished with some very desperate hammers and
floating passes straight to the endzone from both teams, trading
point for point. The Phat Ed's drew level with thirty seconds
to go and it looked like a draw was on the cards. In the final
throw of the match we sent a long pass into the endzone that
was caught as the whistle blew for full time to win by one
point.
The
next two games against the Southampton Skunks for a second
time and Strange Blue from Cambridge were hard work. The lack
of substitutes was beginning to become an issue and we were
all very tired. We suffered two heavy defeats. It was unfortunate
to finish the tournament with a losing streak but everyone
involved enjoyed themselves and we came away with no significant
injuries bar Jamie, who managed to get a bloody nose D'ing
a disc with his face and the whole team who suffered with
aching legs.
Overall
this was an encouraging start for the Brunel beginners team
that can be built on next weekend when we host the Brunel
Indoor Beast Tournament.
Not
the Nationals 2001
Seeded three Brunel 1sts only lost one match in the whole
weekend. But after drawing their first match had to work hard
on the first day winning the play off to go through 4th.
On
Sunday after a somewhat restless nights sleep in the church
hall the team wn their quarter final but lost in the semi's
against top seed Shooting Stars. They went on to win 3rd and
4th playoff against Ro-Sham-Bo
Brighton
Indoors 2001
Brunel
Firsts narrowly missed out on qualifying for Nationals, losing
the third/fourth play-off, and the second team played some
great stuff in their first ever tournament.
The seconds finished 14th after an epic 13/14th playoff with
Mohawks(Sussex uni) 3rds, that finished 9:8 in sudden death
overtime.
