Dr Giulio Alfano
Reader - Mechanical Engineering PGR Director

Howell Building 108

Summary

I am Reader in Computational Mechanics at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Brunel University London, which I joined in 2006 as a lecturer. Between 2001 and 2006, I was a lecturer in 'Scienza delle Costruzioni' (i.e. Mechanics of Solids and Structures) at the University of University of Naples ‘Federico II’. The latter is also my Alma Mater, where I obtained my 5-year degree in Civil Engineering in 1994 and my PhD in Structural Engineering in 1997. Between 1998 and 2001, I was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Aeronautics of Imperial College London.

In my research I am interested in modelling the behaviour of materials, solids and structures within and, more often, beyond their elastic limit, combining experimental methods with nonlinear numerical modelling. You can find more details here.

The mechanics of solids and structures and its numerical modelling via linear and nonlinear finite element analysis are also the subjects of my teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
