Research supervision

Dr. Peterson maintains diverse research interests, including alternative theatre histories, musical theatre studies, gender and sexuality studies, theatre historiography, and the student experience in educational settings.

He served as principal supervisor to three PhD students during his tenure at Brunel. One of his supervisees, Ariel Whitfield Sobel, graduated in 2024 with the thesis The Actor, The Audience, and The Spy: Tracing Actor Training Methodologies within Twentieth-Century Espionage Practice and Performance, which was awarded the Vice-Chancellor's Prize for Excellent Research.

Areas of supervision include:

  • Historiography and theatre practices
  • Outdoor and/or street performance practices, politics and histories
  • Gender, sexuality, LGBTQ+ and masculinity studies
  • Musical theatre research and practice
