Biography
Private Arthur Lewis Lloyd was born in Wolverton to William Henry and Mary Jane Lloyd. He attended Borough Road College for two years, where he competed in cricket. After college he enlisted in London into the Royal Army Medical Corps 141st Field Ambulance. He wrote a letter to his mother saying:
June 1915, Isleworth
Dear Mother,
I have given my name to join the Army at the end of this term…
I expect you will be much upset, but I will obtain what I came to College for, the
Teaching Certificate…
I have not rushed into it. It’s practically a year now since the War commenced and
I’ve thought about it ever since. We are not doing at all well either.
I feel a lot easier now I’ve decided to join.
Your loving son,
Lewis
Despite his optimism, he was killed on 20 August 1916 aged 21.
