'Acting Local, Thinking Global': Brunel public lecture series to take on big questions

PublicLecture920x540

Collective responsibility, climate change and public healthcare – there are ever-growing challenges around these topics which long for real solutions. Next month, academics will impart their answers at Brunel University London’s public facing lectures.

Brunel will host its annual Public Lecture Series beginning Wednesday 12 February 2020 until Wednesday 26 February 2020. Year on year the lectures address current global questions, showcasing research as a way of discovering innovative answers and kickstarting social initiatives. This year's theme, ‘Acting Local, Thinking Global’ looks at the unprecedented challenges facing our planet and how we can work in our communities to find solutions.

A host of academic thinkers from across Brunel will be banding together to give talks and take part in panels throughout the month. This includes the likes of Dr Nana Anokye, the Director of Research at the Department of Clinical Sciences and Prof Akram KahnPublic Engagement Champion and Professor of Particle Physics.

The series kicks off with an academic panel: Doctor’s Orders – How can bold new research meet the challenges of healthcare services? Attendants will discuss how public health and personal wellbeing can be supported by research.

Professor Julia Buckingham CBE, Vice-Chancellor and President at Brunel University London, said: “Universities have a key part to play in producing impactful research which aims to provide solutions to the global challenges we face.”

The series will also look at ‘climate control’ and explore the cultural politics of the power of the people to tackle global issues.

The lectures will take place in Brunel’s Eastern Gateway Auditorium.

Tickets are free and can be reserved online. Those unable to attend in person will be able to watch a free live stream, which will be run alongside each event.
