PerkinElmer 1050+ UV-vis-NIR spectrophotometer

At the Experimental Techniques Centre, we have a number of techniques and instruments to cater for a wide variety of materials, samples and products.

As the name suggests, the UV-vis-NIR scans across ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared light. Some common applications of this technique include the determination of concentration of one substance in another, definition of colour and haze measurements.

Our instrument is top-of-the-line, covering a wavelength range much broader that the average spectrophotometer of this type and capable of measuring from 200 nm all the way to 2500 nm, making it a highly versatile technique. It has two sample compartments, the first containing the usual cuvette holders for liquids with sample and reference positions. Easy to use for preparing calibration curves for those concentration studies.

Then there is the second compartment housing the 150 mm integrating sphere, excellent for analysing films and other non-powdered solid samples. There are two sample positions here, for transmittance and reflectance measurements depending on what analysis you require. For the latter it has a specular exclusion port allowing diffuse and total reflectance to be measured separately, for when you really want to know how mirror-like or unlike your sample is.
