English for University Students

Our English Courses for University Students aim to equip you with the English skills necessary for success. As well as improving your English for General Purposes, you will also have the opportunity to develop your English for IELTS.

What we offer:

Expertly-taught English Language classes for adults studying General English and English for IELTS in a mature, scholastic environment.

  • We deliver the tools for you to improve your general English for everyday social situations and academic English for IELTS.
  • We offer a free, weekly activities programme, including day trips to interesting cities, sports activities, and visits to museums, theatres, law courts, media broadcasters and sports venues, such as Wimbledon.
  • You have access to all that Brunel has to offer, including state-of-the-art teaching and sports facilities, library, shops, cafés, bars and canteens.
  • Minimum age 17, maximum class size 14 (normally 12), study 19 hours a week.
  • Accommodation on campus (subject to availability) or with a local host family, who will welcome you into their home, provide you with meals and be happy to enrich your experience of being in the UK.
  • Free airport pick-up.

This course focuses on improving your academic English skills. Classes will include modules on:

  • Pronunciation
  • Everyday English
  • Grammar and Vocabulary
  • Reading and Writing
  • Discussion and Presentation Skills
  • English for IELTS

Assessment

All successful students will receive a certificate of completion.  Students who complete the end-of-course assessment will also receive a certificate of achievement.

Successful completion of this course can also be considered for Credit Transfer to your University, the value being 5 to 15 Credits, depending on the length of the course.

Students who complete this course may wish to consider studying for a term on our Study at Brunel programme, or studying on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree programme.

Progression onto Future Studies

To progress onto an academic course at Brunel you will need to pass the required BrunELT score to meet the language requirements for your academic programme. You will usually not need to take any other English Test.

Students will be greeted at Heathrow airport and brought to their accommodation by private transport.

Everything at Brunel is on one site, including:  hotel and spa, Brunel Language Centre, cafeteria, canteen, restaurant, take-aways, bars, shops, sports facilities, library, lecture theatres, support services, medical centre and more.  Brunel campus is a very secure environment: we have CCTV and our own 24/7 uniformed security team led by a police officer.

Students’ welfare is paramount and will be overseen by Brunel Language Centre. Students will benefit from small class sizes, a weekly tutorial and additional Brunel Language Centre pastoral care as required. In addition, they can take advantage of the University’s dedicated central student support services, including advice services and counselling.

Homestay

Accommodation – what to expect:

Bedrooms are furnished with a bed, reading light, a wardrobe/hanging rail with curtains or blinds at windows. Use of a desk or writing table with chair is accessible to students for study. Bed linen and towels, will be changed at least once a week. Rooms will be cleaned at least once a week.  Heating, lighting, hot water, bathing, (and laundry) facilities. A separate charge can be made to do students washing for them. If there is no use of washing machine, students can be directed to a nearby launderette.

Breakfast: different choices of cereals with milk, bread / toast with butter, jam and marmalade, etc with a choice of drinks hot or cold, fruit juice, tea, coffee or hot chocolate.

Packed lunch

Dinner: meat or fish (varied each day) with potatoes / rice / pasta and vegetables or salad. Hot or cold dessert, yogurt, cake or fruit, a drink, cold water, fruit juice, tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Special dietary requirements as agreed.

A common living area to be shared with the host and other members of the household. Guests will be treated as one of the family. Hosts will converse with guests and make them welcome and, where an evening meal is provided, hosts will eat with the guests as often as possible with exception of emergencies or students’ being unable to be home for the household dinner time where a meal should then be left for them. Students should also make a conscious effort to include themselves and interact with host/family.

Brunel University London is part of Greater London. It is located 20 minutes by taxi from Heathrow and 40 minutes by tube from the centre of London. The nearest town is Uxbridge, which is about 5 minutes by bus or a 20-minute walk. Brunel is the biggest single university campus in the London area.
