Just Transition in Textile Sector
Funder: British Academy
Duration: September 2024 -

This research aims to investigate the environmental and socio-economic challenges of achieving a just transition in Pakistan's textile sector, a key contributor to exports and employment. Faced with growing pressure to meet global decarbonization standards, the sector is marked by disparities in technological capacity and resources across firms. The study explores the technological and financial challenges in the supply chain and seeks solutions for equitable decarbonization. It also examines how shared financing and inclusive governance mechanisms between the Global North and South can support this transition. By considering the historical and socio-cultural legacies that shape labour practices and governance in postcolonial Pakistan, the research aims to develop strategies that are both locally relevant and globally aligned. The ultimate objective is to propose decarbonization approaches that are fair, sustainable, and culturally embedded, with actionable policy recommendations to promote climate action and social equity across the textile manufacturing supply chain.
