Dr Saima Salehjee
Senior Lecturer in Education

Summary

Saima Salehjee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at Brunel University. She is responsible for teaching and research work, particularly in the area of STEM education. Her research projects focus on STEM literacy, public understanding of science, STEM identity and identity transformations over the lifespan of individuals from different ethnic, religious and sexual backgrounds. She has written various journal articles, book chapters, reports and books based on developing lifelong learners in STEM via formal and informal routes. 

Saima has received funding from the Royal Society of Chemistry to continue her research with children on promoting science literacy by using stories as a nudge in science teaching and learning practices. In addition, she has received funding from Skills Development Scotland to develop science teacher-researchers in further Education and completed an interdisciplinary grant funded by the University of Glasgow. Saima is also the convenor of the Race, Ethnicity and Education special interest group of the prestigious British Educational Research Association, and a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Advance HE/ QAA – Anti-Racist curriculum working group, and The Scottish Association of Minority Ethnic Educators.

As a passionate science lecturer, Saima is dedicated to motivating her student teachers to develop pedagogies for and of success. Her goal is to inspire more primary and secondary school students to pursue STEM education and careers, and to enhance the provision of informal STEM learning among adults in Britain.
